Get started as a Self-Taught Artist

Ever since I can remember, I've had this urge to pick up a pencil or brush and just create. There's something about expressing myself through art that feels so right, you know? It's like I'm tapping into this whole other dimension of myself.

So, I decided to dive headfirst into learning and improving my skills. With little formal training, I took a few classes here and there, I had to rely on whatever resources I could find – online tutorials, books, workshops, and a lot of trial and error. Comic books and cartoons were definitely a major influence growing up and even still to this day. It's been a wild ride of practicing, experimenting, and learning from my mistakes.

And let me tell you, I practice like there's no tomorrow! Drawing has become a daily habit for me. Whether it's sketching random scenes or studying anatomy and perspective, I'm always pushing myself to get better. They say practice makes better, and I'm living proof of that.

But it's not just about copying what others have done. It's about finding my own voice as an artist. Sure, I look to the greats like Jim Lee, Boris Vallejo and Stanley Artgerm Lau (among many many GREATS) for inspiration, but I'm not trying to be them. I'm taking bits and pieces from everywhere and weaving them into something that's uniquely me. It's about embracing my quirks and imperfections and letting my personality shine through in my art.

Above all, being a visual artist is about having fun. It's about finding joy in the process – from the excitement of bringing an idea to life to the satisfaction of knowing that my art has touched someone else's heart. Sure, there are challenges along the way, but the rewards make it all worth it.

So, if you're thinking about diving into the world of visual art, just go for it! Grab that pencil or brush and start creating. The canvas is yours for the taking, and the only limit is your imagination. Embrace the journey, push your boundaries, and never stop expressing yourself. After all, the world is waiting to see the masterpiece that is uniquely you.
